Dear Shannon: “How do we prepare for our engagement shoot?”

With fall right around the corner, we’re having more and more discussions about engagement sessions. We love doing engagement shoots because it gives our photographers & our clients a chance to connect on a personal level before the wedding day.  It also serves as an opportunity to see how we work, so you know what to expect on your big day.

Engagement shoots are definitely easier and more successful when our couples are well prepared.  So, I wanted to take a moment to mention a few things that I’ve found over the years to be crucial to getting fabulous engagement photos.

  1. Avoid wearing distracting patterns
  2. Choose a location you feel comfortable at
  3. You have permission to have FUN! We set no rules around this other than those set by the location you are shooting at.
  4. You should be able to freely express affection & emotion

These are really the only parameters we set around our engagement shoots.  We want them to be carefree and enjoyable for everyone involved.  Getting the most out of your shoot is a team effort…We know it can be intimidating to open up in front of a complete stranger, so we will do our part and be ourselves so that you feel comfortable being yourself.  We’ll also make sure you’re in the best light, and we’ll do a little directing to help you know what to do once you’re in front of the camera.  You should be at full liberty to be yourself and have fun, so go ahead and laugh, be goofy, be confident, show affection.  That’s what will make your images great!
